Investment adviser gets prison after $1.5M fraud against clients, father

A Vadnais Heights investment advisor was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison after misappropriating client funds, Minnesota's U.S. Attorney's Office said Friday. Joel William Carlson, 43, pleaded guilty in September to two counts of tax evasion. Prosecutors said Carlson admitted spending more than $1.5 million in funds from clients — including his father — on himself and failing to file personal income tax returns for 2010 and 2011.
