In 2012, Brunner, a Republican from Frontenac, lost a three-way primary for the U.S. Senate to Rep. Todd Akin. Akin later lost to incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill after creating a firestorm surrounding his comments on rape and abortion, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
