Hawaii Electric Light Co. spends $2M to deal with Big Island lava flow

Hawaii Electric Light Co. has spent about $2 million to deal with the lava that has been flowing from the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island for nearly nine months, the utility said in a letter to state regulators. HELCO, a subsidiary of Honolulu-based Hawaiian Electric Co., said it expects to continue to incur costs as it addresses customer and systems needs created by the lava, which began flowing on June 27, 2014.
